The 2022 Ford F-150 & The 2022 Toyota Tundra - Which Is Better?

For the first time in 15 years, the Toyota Tundra is completely redesigned, inside and out. Meanwhile, everyone's favorite Ford Truck is into its 14th generation and is still Ford’s best-seller. With both of these hot new trucks on the market this year, you may have a tough choice on your hands. So let’s look at as much info as we can to compare these two.

2022 Toyota Tundra

Starting with this brand new beast of a truck redesigned for the first time in years, let’s dive into some of our favorite things about the 2022 Tundra.

We have a hugely improved fuel economy coming in at 18/24mpg and a 32gal tank. In addition, the towing capacity has increased to 8,300-12,000lbs and the payload to 1,940lbs. These numbers have increased significantly since the 2007 model, making it a true competitor for the F-150.

The engine comes standard with the iForce V-6 with 389 Horsepower & 479 pound-feet of torque, but is also available in the iForce Max hybrid V-6 with 437 Horsepower & 583 pound-feet of torque. The previously 6-speed automatic is now a 10-speed. The new steel-ladder framing and the aluminum reinforced composite bed makes this truck extremely durable and stable.

You’ll find all-electric mirrors, windows, and a sunroof on the inside. It comes with a 14-inch touchscreen, a 12-inch digital gauge cluster, and wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. In addition, it has multiple camera angles to make towing a breeze. Pricing starts at $35,950 for the SR Trim.

The biggest issue with this year's Tundra is what most vehicles face when new generations arrive. There are a few minor hiccups, such as the driver-side door being known to glitch out, locking and unlocking multiple times.

There were also some reports of wastegate malfunctions, and it hasn’t been determined if this was a software or a mechanical problem. Additionally, according to certain dealerships, the parts to repair the wastegate problem seem to be back-ordered.

2022 Ford F-150

Next up, we have the classic F-150. For the 14th time since it was released, it has been redesigned and is still a competitive, top-of-the-line truck.

This year, Ford has given us great fuel economy at a whopping 20/26mpg (Better than the Tundra), with a 26gal tank. Towing capacity has not changed much since the last model, at 8,200-14,000lbs and a payload of 1,400 to 3,325 lbs. If you pick up the higher trim levels, the F-150's towing capabilities take the cake.

Ford is sticking with its 10-speed automatic and several V-6 engine options. With a hybrid engine option as well as the Raptor, horsepower ranges from 290 to 450 and torque ranges from 265 to 570 pound-feet depending on the trim. Later this year the Raptor R will boast a whopping 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque! Should Toyota develop a high performance desert dune racer to compete with the Raptor? Maybe they could call it the Toyota Pterodactyl?! One can dream.. In any case, all available F-150 trims have excellent handling and control as well as linear steering.

Most F-150 trims come with a standard 8-inch touchscreen display, with options for a 12-inch. There are also options for up to 18 Bang & Olufsen speakers, and Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is standard. The 2022 F-150 is also significantly cheaper than its competitor at lower trims, with the starting price running you about $30,495.

While the F-150 may initially look like the cheaper option, keep in mind that every single additional option you want will drive up the cost. This means the price of this vehicle can quickly double in cost if you’re looking to get it decked out.

For the hybrid option, buyers have complained it's not nearly as smooth as expected. The braking feels a bit off, and the shifting is clunky. Hopefully, later versions will improve this issue, because the old-fashioned feel is a huge turn-off for hybrid buyers.

Choosing The Best Truck For You

The competition is close, and both of these vehicles are neck and neck in many areas. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing either of these trucks. However, if you are looking for longevity and reliability, it may be too soon to tell if the Tundra will live up to the standard set by its previous generation. The F-150, however, has proven the test of time over and over again.
